About
Itqaan Institute is dedicated to transmitting perfection, precision and mastery of Qur’anic recitation as a way of seeking closeness to God and following his Prophet ﷺ. Our intention is to preserve and foster love for the book of God by connecting our students to a living master of Qur’anic recitation with a sanad (chain of transmission) which goes back to the Prophet himself ﷺ.
Itqaan Institute’s methodology emphasises the organic learning of the rules of recitation through practice with a master teacher. This is in keeping with traditional modes of Qur’anic learning, transmitted to Shaykh Abdallah and the other scholars through their teachers. Shaykh Abdallah corrects his students as they recite to him. They learn all the rules of tajwid and the makhaarij (exit points, or correct pronunciation) of the letters organically through practice, recitation and correction. This is in contrast to many contemporary courses which often prioritize theoretical over practical or applied knowledge of recitation. Itqaan’s methodology combines the two.
Itqaan encourages all students to memorize part or all of the Qur’an, though also welcome students who wish to improve their recitation without memorization.
Shaykh Abdallah memorized the Qur’an at the age of 16 and became a world renowned Qari’ at the age of 18. Upon memorizing the Qur’an, he received his ijaza from Shaykh Muhammad Sukkar, who held the highest ijaza in the world before he passed (rahimahullah). Shaykh Abdallah studied under some of the world’s most prestigious scholars for over two decades in Syria and has travelled all over the world to share his beautiful recitation and mastery of the Qur’an.
He immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1999, working as an Imam and Qur’an teacher in various major cities, including Orlando, Florida, Dallas, Texas and Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the senior scholar and co-founder of Itqaan Institute and currently resides in Toledo, Ohio with his family, where he devotes his time exclusively to teaching Qur’an.
